‘Swift’

2017

Swift Night_DSC7972In 2016, I was commissioned by Crown Estates to create a giant, aerial, temporary, outdoor sculpture installation to celebrate Princesshay Shopping Centre’s 10th birthday.  I collected copper wire and hundreds of plastic milk bottles salvaged from the cafes and restaurants in Princesshay which were then cut into the shape of swifts.

The sculpture aimed to raise awareness of issues around migration, habitat, resources and recycling while giving people a reason to look up and appreciate the beauty in nature around us.  Swifts are summer visitors to Britain, flying thousands of miles to breed and raise their chicks and then returning in the autumn to central Africa – coincidentally where much of the copper we use is mined.
